A Boiler Room event in Seoul, South Korea, was abruptly shut down on July 27th due to reported overcrowding. The event, held at the Sfactory club in Seongsu-dong, ended when emergency services responded to safety concerns by dispatching 11 fire engines and 42 firefighters around 1 AM.
While some officials stated that 4,500 tickets were sold for a venue with a 2,000 capacity, other reports suggest up to 6,000 attendees. However, Boiler Room claimed the event was within capacity limits at the time of closure. “Contrary to what has been reported, we sold to the capacity that was instructed by our partner in Seoul,” they stated.
Attendees reported significant safety issues, including non-functional bathrooms, long queues, poor access to water, and inadequate air conditioning. A Reddit user described the event as “oversold” with insufficient precautions, highlighting the need for better safety protocols in Korea’s growing rave scene.
The shutdown occurred before Peggy Gou’s headline set. Gou expressed her disappointment and assured fans she would reschedule. Other artists, including Soichi Terada and Xing Xing, also voiced their frustration over the event’s abrupt end.
This incident follows other tragic crowd-related events, such as the Itaewon Halloween crush in Seoul and the Astroworld festival in Houston. These incidents underscore the importance of stringent crowd management and safety measures at large events.
Boiler Room is addressing the issues and refunding ticket holders, emphasizing the need for improved safety protocols to prevent future occurrences.
