MGM Resorts is set to bring a dazzling new attraction to Dubai with its own version of the iconic ‘Sphere,’ as CEO Bill Hornbuckle confirmed at the Skift Global Forum. Although smaller than the Las Vegas Sphere, the Dubai Sphere promises to be just as captivating. Located in the middle of MGM’s upcoming $2 billion luxury hotel complex, which includes MGM, Bellagio, and Aria, this new venue will offer a unique blend of cutting-edge entertainment and immersive experiences.
Hornbuckle described the Dubai Sphere as a 110-meter-high structure with a 300-seat mini-showroom designed to provide captivating visual and sound effects. Unlike its Las Vegas counterpart, which can accommodate up to 18,600 guests, the Dubai Sphere will focus on a more intimate experience. The venue will host a show that takes visitors through the history of Dubai, offering a unique narrative about the city’s transformation from a desert to a booming metropolis.
While the Dubai Sphere shares similarities with the Las Vegas version, Hornbuckle clarified that it is not connected to Sphere Entertainment, the company behind the original Vegas Sphere. MGM is currently handling the project independently, though the possibility of partnering with other entities remains open.
A Long-Awaited Development in Dubai
Originally announced in 2017, MGM Resorts’ Dubai project has seen slow progress over the years. However, the construction contract was finally awarded in 2023, setting the stage for the creation of this luxurious complex. The three MGM Resorts brands—MGM, Bellagio, and Aria—will offer over 1,400 hotel rooms on the island, located near Burj Al Arab.
When Will the Dubai Sphere Open?
While no official opening date has been set for the Dubai Sphere, it’s expected to open in conjunction with the rest of the MGM island complex. Given the scale of the development, it’s likely that the Dubai Sphere will open within the next few years, though the exact timeline remains unclear. Stay tuned for more updates as the project moves closer to completion.
The Future of Spheres Around the Globe
While MGM’s Dubai Sphere is an independent project, the broader vision of building Spheres worldwide is still part of Sphere Entertainment’s long-term strategy. James Dolan, CEO of MSG, revealed plans for smaller Spheres in different markets, contributing to a growing global footprint of immersive entertainment venues.
For now, MGM’s Dubai Sphere stands as a testament to Dubai’s ambition to remain at the forefront of luxury and entertainment, offering a unique experience for both locals and tourists. Stay tuned for updates on the official opening and the incredible experiences this venue will bring to the Middle East.
